Honoring Black History Month: A Commitment to Every Patient We Serve
February is Black History Month, a time to recognize the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history. At Jordan & Associates OB/GYN, it is also a time to reflect on our responsibility as healthcare providers and to reaffirm our commitment to equitable, compassionate care for every patient who walks through our doors.
Recognizing Trailblazers in Women’s Health
The field of obstetrics and gynecology owes a great deal to Black pioneers whose work changed medicine for the better. Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1864, dedicating her career to caring for women and children who had nowhere else to turn. Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens became the first Black woman admitted to the American College of Surgeons and spent decades expanding access to prenatal care and cancer screening in underserved communities. Their legacies remind us that progress in medicine has always depended on those willing to open doors for others.
Acknowledging the Work Still Ahead
Black History Month is also a moment for honesty. Black women in the United States continue to face significant disparities in maternal health outcomes, and these gaps persist across income and education levels. As providers, we believe acknowledging this reality is the first step toward changing it.
At our practice, that commitment looks like listening carefully to every patient’s concerns, taking symptoms seriously the first time they are raised, and building care plans in partnership with the women we serve. Every patient deserves to feel heard, respected, and safe in our care.
